Leading marketplace Poshmark becomes a partner in fighting online wildlife trafficking

In celebration of World Elephant Day on August 12th, IFAW is excited to announce Poshmark as a new company member of the Coalition to End Wildlife Trafficking Online. Poshmark – a leading social marketplace where people can buy and sell new or gently used clothing, shoes, accessories, and home goods – is the first fashion-centric e-commerce company to join the Coalition. As a leading marketplace to buy and sell apparel in the US and Canada, Poshmark is encouraging the industry to become a key partner in fighting online wildlife trafficking.

Wildlife trafficking—the buying and selling of protected species and products made from them—is a multi-billion dollar industry that drives poaching and decimates a variety of animal populations, including elephants, rhinos, tigers, and pangolins. Disrupting these networks takes an integrated and international approach, which is why IFAW, WWF, and TRAFFIC are collaborating with companies across continents to unite the online technology industry and maximize impact for reducing wildlife cybercrime through the Coalition.

Private sector partners, such as Poshmark, play a key role in ending wildlife trafficking by eliminating the available marketplaces for traffickers to operate online. As a Coalition partner, Poshmark has updated its prohibited items policy to align with the Coalition’s Prohibited Wildlife Policy Framework. Items related to the illegal trade of live animals, or items resulting from the poaching of protected species, are officially banned from being sold on Poshmark.

Online-Marktplatz „Deine Tierwelt“

Der Online-Marktplatz „Deine Tierwelt” verbietet ab sofort den Handel mit geschützten Tieren auf seinem Portal. Diese Entscheidung resultiert aus Gesprächen zwischen „Deine Tierwelt“ und dem IFAW (International Fund for Animal Welfare). Die Änderung der Nutzungsbedingungen betrifft die Arten, die in der EU-Artenschutzverordnung auf Anhang A und B geführt werden, wie z. B. der Graupapagei und der Madagaskar Taggecko.

Dem Tierschutz und dem Kampf gegen illegalen Welpenhandel hat sich DeineTierwelt bereits seit Langem aktiv verschrieben. Der logische nächste Schritt: Gemeinsam mit dem International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) sagen wir jetzt auch dem illegalen Wildtierhandel den Kampf an.

Coalition removing millions of adverts

Facebook and Google, along with 32 more of the world's biggest technology companies, have been removing millions of adverts online associated with wildlife trading, and experts fear numbers in China could surge in the wake of coronavirus.

TECH COMPANIES TAKE DOWN 3M LISTINGS

Online technology companies in the Coalition to End Wildlife Trafficking Online reported removing or blocking over 3 million listings for endangered and threatened species and associated products from their online platforms to date. These listings included live tigers, reptiles, primates and birds for the exotic pet trade, as well as products derived from species like elephants, pangolins and marine turtles.
